'Masked Sentiments' is a community driven making experience which derives inspiration from the practice of burning to heal.
Ever since the pandemic reared its ugly head in March 2020, we have all had to deal with an incredibly complex sets of changes over which we may have had little control, leaving us with feelings of anger, frustration, fear, and sadness and grief. 'Masked Sentiments' is designed to facilitate 'letting go' of your accumulated negative baggage through writing and making.
Letting go is vitally important to positive mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health. In doing so, one can go on with life again, no longer negatively affected by the feelings of the past. Letting go provides clarity and an unbiased place to make choices from. This is central to Shamanic teachings which emphasize the importance of releasing the old – that which no longer serves us – in order to invite in the new. Letting go of negative energies to heal past emotional wounds creates opportunity for the positive and new.
Over the next 8 months we will work with the community to create paper masks which contain personal sentiments from the profane to profound. These masks are being gathered, and will be burned as part of a Community Cleansing Experience during the summer of 2022.
